PvE / MMO / Open World Gaming / Cheating at Starfield
September 13, 2023, 09:52:22 AM
In response to some chats on Discord here's some more info. All of this can be found on the Web but I've condensed it down for easy reference.

Using codes in Starfield is trivially easy. It's worth considering the following.

Using codes breaks Xbox achievements, something I really couldn't care less about.

The game has fixed levels for specific star systems so you will be OP early in the game and some missions will be trivialised.

You can play with ship building and then start a game without codes and play normally

To access the console type @

In order to be able to play freely with the ship builder you need money

player.additem f 500000 or however much you want

You need level four piloting

player.addperk 002CFCAC add this four times, once for each level

You need Ship Design level four

player.addperk 002C59DC  add this four times, once for each level

and you need to be high level to access the Type C components, specifically engines, reactors and grav drives to be able to push you behemoth ship about.

player.setlevel 80  add this four times, once for each level

To enter free fly mode so you can get better photo angles than you can in 'Photo mode' (can be a bit buggy)

tfc

To turn off the hud for cleaner images

tm

The web is full of sites that show every console command, just Google it

Hopefully once you have reset your password you'll be able to see into the forums and post.

A few

Seriously though ... / Extending a BT Fibre cable
August 06, 2022, 11:57:29 AM
I have FTTP and need to extend the cable coming into the house by a few metres. I've Googled but still can't work out of this is possible.

Currently the cable comes into the house through the window frame, down to floor level in a bit of trunking and then runs under the carpet to the BT modem on the other side of the room.

However I now need to run the cable up over and around a  door frame to reach the modem, as I'm having hardwood floors fitted and the cable obviously can't go under this flooring. This means I need about 2m of extra length to reach the modem. Moving the modem closer to the incoming fibre cable isn't an option.

Is there such a thing as a fibre extension cable, where I can plug the existing cable into one end and the other into the modem, thereby adding the extra few metres I need?

I'm thinking maybe not as so far I can't find anywhere to buy said extension cable?

I assumed this would be a liberal whinge about leaving Europe and what bad idea the lecturer thought it was. And the first few minutes did seem to suggest that was what I was watching.
Actually it's a very balanced and well explained summary of what happened - good and bad. It nice to get a bit of perspective.

Technology Section / Motherboard says no.
February 02, 2022, 11:00:42 PM
Had to happen eventually but my 2015 built PC had finally
gone pop and the motherboard dead, so that's that. It wasn't part of my grand plan to start a new build project
but looks like I'm getting out the screwdrivers and learning about this new fangled watercooling and Non-Volatile Memory Express  ???

At least there's loads of stock about so getting parts shouldn't be a problem.

I'm guessing everyone was bored or something but I'm wondering why the entire dMw community, and then some,
decided to check the forum's at Stupid O'clock on 16th October 2020? Beat our old record by about a thousand.

Did I miss something?

Dungeon and Dragons / Critical Roll - their best
October 21, 2021, 09:05:30 PM
I've just watched Critical Roll's 'Doom Eternal One Shot'. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Regardless of whether you're a D&D fan this is priceless stuff.

Technology Section / Mesh Wifi - question
July 13, 2021, 05:06:08 PM
I'm wondering if the following set up is possible with a Mesh WI-Fi system. this is probably a terrible explanation but here goes........

1. Main Mesh router in living room connected to Fibre Modem. The existing Wi-Fi router gives decent Wi-Fi across almost all the house.

2. 2nd Mesh unit connected to the 1st unit via  Wi-Fi back-haul. It's not possible to connect these two units with Cat cable so it has to be Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi signal in the kitchen is decent so there should be no problem connecting the two units this way.

3. 3rd unit in an annex cottage. This unit can be hard wired into the 2nd unit as I can run Cat 6 between them, but it cannot receive a Wi-Fi signal from either of the other Mesh units as the walls are too thick.

4. The 3rd unit provides Wi-Fi connectivity around the cottage.

That's -     Main router in living room -----------Wi-Fi (cannot run Cat 6) ------------- 2nd unit in kitchen------------Cat6 (cannot receive Wi-Fi signal) --------------3rd unit in cottage.

I know Mesh systems can connect to each other either through a 3rd Wi-Fi channel or Cat cable but I am not sure if they can do a combination of both?

Anyone have any expertise with Mesh systems or achieved what I'm trying to do?

Cheers in advance.

Seriously though ... / Ohh Exciting - accounts
May 05, 2021, 04:43:30 PM
Here's a fascinating question on an equally fascinating subject - business accounts.

I'm in the process of buying and furnishing a holiday let cottage with the wife. We're planning on running it as a general partnership (maybe sole traders) and using the cash accounting system. We'll get an accountant at some point but I'm curious about one thing.

In the first year 2021 - 2022 we're going to spend a shedload of money fitting the place out with furniture, redecoration, white goods etc. etc. all of which will be for the sole use of holiday let, so I'm assuming these expenses will all be tax deductible.
It seems very likely that we'll spend far more on stuff than we will earn in profit in 2021-22 meaning we'll have no tax bill for this year.
However is there any way we can take the rest of the expenses and off set them against tax for future years? Would this be a Trading loss?

I'm not asking for proper financial advise but wondered if anyone had had a similar situation? Cheers.

No work today so I have far too much time on my hands, which will become obvious very quickly.

I've always had a bit of an interest in the quirks of probability, statistics and our regular inability to effectively assess risks in our lives.
I have an example of how we can have these logic missteps, you can try this and maybe make a few quid into the bargain.

Choose any FA cup final you like, doesn't matter which. Now consider the number of people on the pitch during live play. That would be twenty three. Eleven players on each team and the referee. Each of these people has a birthday and that day could be any one of three hundred and sixty five days. Ignore 29th February and leap years for now.

So we have 23 people and three hundred and sixty five different potential birthdays. What is the chance that two or more players share the same birthday? Not born on the same day but just share the same birthday?
We'll have a bet, say £10. But you get to decide which way you want to bet and I have to take the other choice. So you can say "I do not think any of the 23 players share a birthday." and if you are right you win the tenner. Or you can say "I think two or more people do share a birthday." and if you're right you again win the £10. I have to take the other option.

Statistically which choice seems the more likely. 23 people on the field with 365 possible birthdates to share. If you decide that it seems unlikely that two people share the exact same day and month you would not be alone. Almost everyone would choose that a birthday is not shared and almost everyone would be wrong! It's slightly more likely that two people on that football field do indeed share a birthday. 50.07% to be exact. So you're only a tiny bit wrong, but make that choice many times and you will end up loosing money. If you play the same game but include four substitutes, two linesmen and two team medics, choose right - then you're onto a winner as it's close to a 75% chance that a birthday is shared.

We make this bad choice due to coming at the problem backwards and looking at 365 days and 23 people and somehow comparing the big number of years to the small number of people and making an assumption. But the way to think about the problem is backwards.

  • If you have two people on the pitch then there is one way they can share a birthday, it's just to share it with each other, there is no one else. So the chance is 1/365. Pretty clear.
  • But if you have three people there are three ways they can share a birthday A & B, A & C and B & C. That's a 1/222 chance or about 0.8%.
  • Four people get more likely, obviously. There are six ways four people can share a birthday - A & B, A & C, A & D, B & C, B & D, C & D. That's 1/61 or 1.63%
  • Five people gives you 1/37
  • Six people gives you 1/25
  • and so on until 23 people which is just better than 1/2 or 50.729%

What we do subconsciously is think about the chance of two specific people sharing a birthday (1/365) rather than any two people sharing a birthday which as shown is 1/2.

I began thinking about this as it's quite worrying that this problem understanding probability and risk (and I am just as able to make these mistakes as anyone else) seems to be affecting our daily lives, Especially at the moment.

There is some good evidence that the Oxford Vaccine can very occasionally produce blood clots which can themselves sometimes prove fatal. However there is also mounting evidence that Covid 19 itself can cause blood clots. These blood clots can occur in the under 30 age group as well and seem to be higher in women aged under 60. So people are worried about whether they should take the jab and governments around the world are making some arbitrary decisions which they claim is to protect the public. But is this sound thinking or are politicians as easily confused by the statistics as the rest of us.

Currently the belief is that in the UK there is about a 1 in 250,000  chance of developing a blot clot after taking the Oxford Vaccine.

In the UK 36,000 people a year develop blood clots for any reason, which is about 1 in 1,833 people regardless of whether they had Covid 19 or a vaccine or neither.

UK Women seem to be far less "wave their arms around in blind panic". There is a 1 in 2,000 chance of developing clots when taking the contraceptive pill and there are zero restrictions on prescribing that to otherwise healthy women!

And most telling of all is that the chance of getting blood clots from actually catching Covid -19 itself is believed to be 39 in a million (more data coming in all the time), which is significantly higher than 4 in a million from the vaccine. 8 to 9 times higher. Add the fact that 30% of blood clotting seen in Covid 19 patients is in under 30's and the statistical chance of getting a clot from the disease is still a lot higher for young people than from the vaccine.

Now of course some people who have the vaccine were actually never going to catch the virus. So statistically it's possible someone who would have lived to a ripe old age actually died having a vaccine they in fact didn't need. But Covid 19 isn't a one time deal. If everyone decided not to get jabbed then eventually everyone would catch the disease or one of it's increasingly 'interesting' variants and far more people would die from clotting let alone all the other far more common ways Covid 19 can kill you -

Hypoxia
Sepsis
Multiple organ failure
Septic shock
Respiratory failure
cardiovascular failure
Pulmonary embolism (correct me if I'm wrong Dr Chaos :) )

I'm speculating now but I guess the reason the UK has shifted to not giving the Oxford vaccine to under 30's is more about pandering to the Me First Culture and less about actually saving lives. It's also very telling that all the medical experts and Health Boards and authorities (MHRA (UK), EMA (Europe), WHO (world)) are of one clear voice. listen to the science and follow the data "Get the jab whether it's Moderna, Pfizer, Oxford AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson etc. To do otherwise is idiotic"

While politicians, Governments etc seem not to be so clear and maybe a bit "How do I appear to be Ministerial, listen to the worries of the general public (moronic or not)  and get re-elected next time?"

Oh half three already, time to walk the dog :D

Technology Section / New PC - crazy times
March 30, 2021, 01:50:16 PM
I was having a poke around scan.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk as I'm thinking about getting a new PC. So many nice looking systems seem to be out of stock or waiting components. Can I assume we're still in the no GPU's anywhere on Earth situation.
I've decided to go all moral and join the Chaos Clan so no Nvidia for me. However I still can't see any really decent rigs that aren't waiting for bits? Am I just looking in the wrong place or are things really that bad?
